The UK is the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.

The British regulator, MHRA, says the vaccine, which offers up to 95% protection against Covid-19, is safe to use.

Immunizations can be started within a few days for people and high-risk groups.

The UK has already ordered 40 million doses, enough to vaccinate 20 million people, in two phases each.

It is the fastest vaccine to move from concept to reality, taking just 10 months and has followed the same developmental steps that normally take a decade.

Although vaccination may begin, people still need to stay vigilant and follow the coronavirus rules to stop the spread, experts say.
